Day 01

Get immersed. Feel the city.

no agenda, no rushing. today is about orientation ✦ neighborhoods, canals, energy. let amsterdam introduce itself on its own terms.

morning ✦ settle in
Drop your bags & get your bearings
Check in, get oriented. Pull up the Google list and scan what's near your hotel before you head out. This is your home base for four days ✦ know what's walking distance.
tip: filter the Google list by your neighborhood first. that's your Day 1 radius.
late morning
First meal & first coffee
Find a spot from the list or wander until something calls. Today you're eating by feel, not by plan.

🍳 breakfast TBD ☕ coffee stop TBD
☕ coffee shop note: if that's your thing, Amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world for it. coffeeshops are legal, clearly marked, and everywhere. start light if it's your first time ✦ you're walking a lot today.
afternoon
Canal cruise
The best way to understand Amsterdam's layout is from the water. Guided tour or a self-guided boat rental ✦ either works. You'll pass through the Jordaan, the canal ring, and get the full picture of how the city is built.
tip: boat rentals are chaotic and fun if you want to drive it yourselves. evening slots catch golden hour on the canals.
mid-afternoon
Walking tour + a snack
Walk a neighborhood loop ✦ the Jordaan and De 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets) are perfect for first-day wandering. Independent shops, small galleries, canal bridges. Grab a snack mid-walk.

🥐 snack TBD
neighborhoods to clock: Jordaan · De Pijp · Oud-West · the canal ring. take note of which vibe you're drawn to ✦ it'll shape Day 3.
evening
Dinner & night lounge
First night dinner ✦ make it a treat. Amsterdam does Italian, seafood, and oyster bars really well. Cocktails after, somewhere low-key. You walked a lot today. You earned it.

🍝 dinner TBD 🍸 cocktails TBD

canal cruise was the right call for day one. seeing the whole city from the water before you do anything else just makes everything click 🛶

Day 02

Museum day. Slow it down.

museumplein is the cultural center of the city. rijksmuseum, van gogh, stedelijk ✦ all in one square. you don't have to do all three. pick your pace.

morning
Breakfast
Start slow. A café with good eggs or a proper Dutch breakfast. Amsterdam breakfast spots are small, cozy, and worth taking your time at.

🍳 breakfast TBD
mid-morning
Tram to Museumplein
Hop the tram ✦ don't walk, save your energy. The Rijksmuseum facade opens up in front of you and it never gets old. Book tickets in advance, the queues are no joke.
tip: Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are right next to each other. pick one to go deep on rather than rushing both.
afternoon
Lunch + Van Stapele cookies
Lunch near the museum district, then make the walk to Van Stapele Koekmakerij. One type of cookie, warm, filled with chocolate ganache. The line moves fast. Non-negotiable.

🥗 lunch TBD 🍪 Van Stapele Koekmakerij
Van Stapele: Heilige weg 2, near Kalverstraat. confirm cash/card before you go.
afternoon cont.
Coffee shop break
If that's your jam ✦ mid-afternoon on a museum day is the move. You've already done the culture, now decompress. Then circle back for more museum time or the Stedelijk (contemporary art) if you've got energy left.
☕ coffee shop note: don't mix up coffee shops (coffeeshops) and regular cafés ✦ the signs are different. coffeeshops will have their menu visible at the door. staff are used to tourists and will walk you through it.
late afternoon
Neighborhood stroll
Wander into whichever neighborhood called to you on Day 1. The canal ring is beautiful in late afternoon light. Find a coffee, sit by a canal.

☕ afternoon coffee TBD
evening
Oysters & night plans
Good night for oysters or a seafood spot. Check the Google list for what's closest to where you ended up.

🦪 oysters TBD 🌙 night plans TBD

Day 03

Your call. Pick your adventure.

day three is a fork. go deeper into amsterdam, get out to zaandam, or take it to rotterdam. all three are valid. just pick before breakfast.

option a ✦ stay in the city
More Amsterdam
Go back to a neighborhood you didn't finish. Hit the Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp on a weekday. Explore the Jordaan's side streets. Find that bookshop or record store you clocked on Day 1 but didn't have time for. Use the Google list to build a loose route.
option b ✦ day trip north
Zaandam
17-minute train from Amsterdam Centraal. Zaanse Schans is the windmill village ✦ wooden houses, historic mills, open-air museum energy. Go early, beat the crowds, and be back by afternoon for a proper dinner.
option c ✦ day trip south
Rotterdam
40 minutes by train and a completely different city. Modern architecture, the Markthal, the cube houses, the port. Where Amsterdam is historical and romantic, Rotterdam is bold and forward. Worth it if you want contrast.
morning
Breakfast ✦ same ritual, different spot
Find somewhere new for breakfast. By now you have a type. Lean into it.

🍳 breakfast TBD ☕ coffee TBD
☕ coffee shop note: if you're doing a day trip (Zaandam or Rotterdam), have your coffeeshop moment in Amsterdam before you leave ✦ the vibe is different in those cities and you'll want your wits for the train and navigating somewhere new.
mid-morning to afternoon
Your chosen adventure
Whichever fork you picked ✦ commit. If Zaandam or Rotterdam, get on the train before 10am and give yourself 3–4 hours. If staying in Amsterdam, pick two or three Google list spots in your target neighborhood and walk between them.
Rotterdam tip: the Markthal food hall is a must ✦ lunch in there, then walk the cube houses (Kubuswoningen) which are literally steps away. architecture people will lose their minds.
afternoon
Lunch + wander
Lunch wherever makes sense for where you are. Let the afternoon be loose.

🥗 lunch TBD
evening
Dinner & cocktails
Good night for a steakhouse or burger ✦ switch it up from the seafood. Then somewhere with good cocktails and low energy.

🥩 steakhouse / burger TBD 🍸 cocktails TBD

Day 04

Back to your favorites.

no new agenda. this day belongs to the places that already got you. revisit, eat the thing again, buy what you talked yourself out of earlier.

morning
Breakfast at your favorite spot
You know where to go now. Go back to the place that felt most like Amsterdam. Take your time ✦ this is the last slow morning.
mid-morning
Revisit your people, your places
The shop you didn't go back to. Van Stapele again ✦ obviously. The canal you liked best. Anything from the Google list you starred but never made it to.
☕ coffee shop note: last day, no agenda ✦ if you want a mellow coffeeshop morning before a slow wander, this is the day for it. pick somewhere canal-side and just exist for a bit.
afternoon
Last lunch + final wander
Make it a good one. Check the Google list for anything you starred and never got to.

🍽️ final lunch TBD
evening
Farewell dinner
Make it a proper send-off. Oysters to start, something worth writing home about. Then find a canal to sit by with a drink and just be in it ✦ one last time.

🦪 oysters TBD 🍷 farewell dinner TBD 🌙 canal-side nightcap

Quick notes

things to know before you go

getting around
Tram system is easy and covers most of the city. Use a contactless card or grab an OV-chipkaart. Bikes are everywhere ✦ renting one is worth it if you're comfortable with Amsterdam traffic (it is real traffic).
museum tickets
Book Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum in advance. Walk-up tickets sell out fast, especially in summer. Go direct through museum websites ✦ skip the third-party resellers.
coffee shops 101
Legal, clearly marked, and everywhere. Staff are used to first-timers and will walk you through the menu. Start lighter than you think you need to. Mixing with alcohol hits differently ✦ take it easy until you know your tolerance.
day trips
Zaandam is 17 min north. Rotterdam is 40 min south. Both worth it for totally different reasons. Trains run frequently from Amsterdam Centraal ✦ no pre-booking needed for most departures.
cash & cards
Most places take card, but smaller cafés and market stalls may be cash-only. Keep some euros on hand. Van Stapele ✦ confirm before you go.
the google list
100+ personally saved spots. Filter by neighborhood in Google Maps and use it as your daily reference ✦ sorted to work alongside this guide wherever you are in the city.
